I want to be cool, too! But I'm too uncool to find the place to do it. I thought it would be an 'edit my profile' option when I look at 'my account,' but that yielded nothing. Help!

It is under 'Change My Profile'.
Look at the section between your PM/email and gear list sections. You should see
"Current Avatar:None Currently
Upload A New Avatar Image:"
