Due to a strain on a tendon in my foot, I need to use hiking boots for a while. I don't have much experience with boots as I have been a fan of trail running shoes, so could anyone offer suggestions on quality lightweight boots? I've been using Vasque and Montrail Vitesse with a single sock layer (Smartwool crew) and have never had a blister going up to ~25 miles per day. I'd use these for 3 season hiking in mainly dry climates.

Any boot plus sock system recommendations would be helpful. Thanks.

I use a pair of Merrell's that I really like. I'd fish out the style, but they are discontinued. I have never had anything but good luck with all of my Merrells in the past. They're comfy, waterproof, and have good Vibram soles.

Jeff,
I don't know how much "boot" you need, but you might take a look at the LaSportiva Trango Guide. It's a beefy mid-ankle approach boot in Nubuck leather with a real solid last and rand, plus a Vibram type sole. They weigh ~40 oz for a size 10. I used them for several years, on trail and off until Montrail brought out the Namche, and really liked them. Speaking of the Namche, they are also worth a look-lots of support in a 32 oz(size 10) boot with a stiff last and excellent sole qualities(traction, grippiness on rock, etc). They are lighter than the Guide and, for me, slightly more comfortable. The Guide is under $100, and the Namche is on sale at Backcountry Outlet for ~$65.
good luck, and I hope you heal quickly.

Hey Jeff,
I recently won a pair of Inov8's and got the Rocklite 370's.

I have the same problem you do, only my problem is that I have 1 leg that is 5/8" longer than the other.

So I have serious problems with the inside of my ankle and foot on that shorter leg.

My left leg, (the shorter one) has been my Scapegoat forever.

If my ankle did not give me any problems I would run 75 miles a week and be going distances longer than I can even dream of doing right now.
My current mileage is about 35-45.
Any more and my ankle will stop me from running until it heals.

When I go for a major distance trail or any other run over 100 miles, it usually takes me out for 2-3 months.

This is why I only plan 1 long distance hike or run a year.

Anyway, the Rocklite's have been a life-saver.
I still have that same ankle problem due to my leg being the problem, but now I don't fell that I have to worry about twisting my ankle, (due to my awkward gate).

If you want support in a light weight boot, the Inov8 boots are the way to go.

They are also completely runable. More so than most of the trail shoes I've ever had.

The lack of weight does not take anything away from the support either.
The design is just amazing.

They also have the 390's that are water-proof.
