What is a good value in a currently made rain shell.
    Should be breathable,
have full zip, and of course be light.
Since it is for my wife it should look nice too-
not too baggy etc. Something for backcountry
    skiing, hiking and running.

My significant other has a Golite Phantom paclite gore-tex jacket–should be around 11 oz. in femme sizing. Has trim appearance, pit zips, excellant hood. Great for all activities mentioned ( what mon Femme uses it for) except for running (overkill, but we use a light softshell or windshell for running in rain/snow). On sale at STP for $99.95 (reg. is $200+). It’s my favorite gore-tex hardshell.

    David,
Try the drop stoppers micropore suit. it is very breathable and light and if you dont like it you only lose $15

Well, the micropore suit definately won’t compete with her beauty.

    Thanks for the ideas.

On a side note, would the dry stoppers work bush
whacking if you wore it under a wind shell etc?

    David,
Academy Outdoor has micropore on sale for $3 for a complete suit. Not durable, but wonderfully breathable and waterproof. You can use them for mosquito protection in warm weather without sweating (when sitting around – don’t push it).

Marmot Precip? It is light, relatively inexpensive (sub $100), has pit zips, good hood, full zipper. I got one on Ebay for $50. There are several Stratus modesl on there now for $49.99 openers.

My favorite rain jacket at this point which also matches your criteria is the Montbell Peak Jacket. It reasonable trim while still having room to layer, nicely finished, light weight (11oz), and more breathable than anything I have tried except eVENT & Propore and has good venting options (most most eVENT and Propore Jackets lack).

Normally I would suggest the Marmot Preclip as the best value price shell that would be attractive, but right now I would suggest the GoLite Phantom which is more or less same cost ($99) as the preclip:
