I have a granite gear xsmall sak . Want to get my FF down jacket into something even smaller. Currently, I've got the compression straps maxed . and I know that it still can get smaller .

Anyone aware of something like this ?
Thanks !

Scott:

Didn't your FF jacket come with its own stuff sack? That's the one you should use.

Sure, you can get it smaller (if you really want to know, you can actually get it to its smallest and flattest by simply putting it inside a 'space bag' and suck out all the air) — but really, you are risking damage to your down jacket. Maximum compression is physically do-able — but is bad for your garment — esp. if done repeatedly — or kept in that compressed state for long.

Never heard of Feathered Friends, but don't they have a stash pocket to store itself inside ?
That is usually the smallest recommended size before the down is compressed to a powder form never to re-inflate again.

If you really must, have a look at the Sea to Summit SN240 XS (5.5"x14"/(2.4oz) ) assuming that your GG is the 6.5"x16.5" version

Ben got in first…

Just a thought-I've never been a huge fan of compression sacks. IMHO, they're too much fuss and heavier than necessary. What I use instead are simple dry sacks. Sea to Summit has some nice ones–packaging simply reads "Dry Sack." I pack my stuff into said sack, fold the top over 1.5 times, then kneel or sit on the sack, forcing out all the air and compressing things with my body weight. It's then a simple matter of rolling the closure all the way down and buckling it. One of the major things I prefer about this method is that once I've gotten things as small as I can, I end up with a malleable "brick," instead of a rigid ball. Packing around a ball doesn't seem efficient to me; the malleable brick I can shape however I want and stash anywhere in my pack. The 1L Dry Sack weighs 1 ounce, measures 6×8.

I've never heard of a smaller compression sack than XS, but to make better use of the space inside that compression sack, you could just put some other articles of clothing in it along with your down jacket. 6 small stuffsacks that are half filled weighs a whole lot more, and packs less efficiently than 3 larger stuffsacks that are mostly filled.

"I've never heard of a smaller compression sack than XS"
Some XS bags are smaller than other XS bags, see my entry above….
However, apart from the recommended stash inside it's pocket version (my puffy jackets do that) , Brad's solution makes sense to me.
