Where do you hike in summer?

I don't know about Jersey but here in the SE we use a regular Hubba Hubba year-round.

If the HP is that airy, that makes it very attractive. I love my mesh inner tent — it blocks out a surprising amount of wind but lets slow-moving current permeate through, which makes for a delightfully comfortable three-season tent. However, it's no good when camping on sandy beach or desert with the wind blowing.

Can someone kick some sand at David's Hubba HP? All in the spirit of testing, of course. :)

Consider the weight:cost ratio, too. $150 USD for 3 ounces less weight in the HP–is it worth it? Personally, I'd suggest you make the decision based more on properties/performance of the inner tent wall…

David, you're absolutely right in many of your assertions, and you make several insightful comments about the differences–thanks! For the record, yeah, I like the HP better, too. I just don't think that there is enough difference in the two tents for *everybody* to bump up to the HP.

The key for me is the increased weather resistance. Hey, I wanna know I'll be warm and dry in a gale! However, many of our backpacking brethern have been ecstatic with the weather resistance of the "plain Jane" hubba… And the vents on the ends of the tent pretty well rock.

Some details just don't get me excited–but that's *me* and IMHO. Fer example, I've had three Arc'Teryx shells with "waterproof" zips that had catastrophic failures as new shells. I even read somewhere recently (BPL site?) that some researchers found that storm flaps are still the only way to guarantee water-tightness. But hey, they're on the tent, they look great, and they sure oughta work, right?!

For the record, my stated price differential is accurate. I have the Cascade/MSR dealer price list in front of me, and MSRP for std. Hubba list is 299, while the HP list is 449. If you got a HP cheaper, sweet! There's also a bit of discrepancy on weights. I realize you know there's a three-ounce difference in minimum weights. The weird thing to me is the stated 6 ounces more-on the HP!-for packaged weight. The scale I have is only accurate to one ounce; the gear loft itself barely bumped the scale to one ounce. I think it's pretty fair to say that the minimum weight difference provides the most accurate picture to the actual weight difference between the standard and HP.

They're both great tents! (And I'm lookin' forward to a user review on the HP.)
