A friend asked me what would be a good replacement for his Golite Breeze which is falling apart and I thought I would ask what the contender now is for that niche across any brand. Thanks.

Fit and comfort are wholly subjective. One thing though — the Breeze has inspired many emulators and now there are many options that are more comfy, more feature rich — and lighter — than the Breeze. Some of the frameless brands that I have used and would recommend:
Fanatic Fringe
Golite
ZPack
I don't care for the very-wide shoulder straps of Gossamer Gear packs — but again — I must emphasize that's a matter of personal fit/comfort. GG too has its legions of enthusiastic fans.
Check out Mountain Laurel Designs Exodus pack. Def seems to pick up where the Breeze left off.
