What type of lens for the trail?

For use in shadier areas as well as in sunlight I'd recommend rose colored sunglasses.

I ski and use rose colored goggles on days that change from sunny to overcast and back. Amber is THE best for foggy, hazy, flat light but not for sunny days.

Thanks Eric, I was sorta leaning that way. Didn't really want rose colored lens just for my ego's sake , lol. But Oakley has some variations of rose tint that should be a good compromise.

I worked as an optician for a couple years, not that it gives me a know-it-all license or anything. Not sure what lens you're getting with your stock Radar Paths. If any kind of gray is your primary lens (polarized, tinted, photochromic) I'd recommend a polarized brown. The brown lens will bump up your contrast noticeably, and won't be as dim in lower-light situations. Great for golf, too! Polarized will cut a lot of glare; unless you're photographing, I haven't found plain tint to be quite as functional. Also, if a mirror is an option, I wouldn't recommend it for what you want. The mirror'll block another 12%-ish light. They do have photochromic brown (turns dark in sunlight, clear in shade); I'm not overly impressed with it, though–it seems to me like they're never quite "enough" dark or too slow to lighten for me. Personal opinion.

If brown is the stock lens… then I'd get amber (orange), and if not that, then rose. Steer clear of grey lenses and mirrors for this time. Any other questions, please feel free to PM me or post again…

Hey Brad, that's some great tips. I'm sorta of in the ball park. The Radar's are coming with polarized black iridium – for very bright sun and neutral colors/contrast. I just ordered the G20 black iridium. they are not as dark ( not polarized as the wife is mad at me for this already!! ) and have a rose tint for flatter light and "enhanced image resolution and contrast." I hope these will be ok for the trail. Thing is I hike in the fall in Banff/Jasper. I see all kinds of conditions from glaciers to low overcast to shady then bright forest trails. I also golf in the summer so was hoping for a crossover. If they don't work well for the trail, well, then there's something to think about for next y year. I couldn't afford another polarized lens let alone their photochromic and I agree I have yet to be impressed with that. If you had any lens for mixed conditions ( not photochromic) what would you get?
