I'm looking for a good loop hike in the Lake Tahoe area that I could do in late August. Any suggestions on routes 35-45 miles in length that start/end within 3 hours of Sacramento?

Tahoe rim trail: http://www.tahoerimtrail.org/. It's longer than 35-45 miles, but nothing says you have to do the whole thing.
You can take the greyhound bus from downtown sacramento to truckee, then take the bus to tahoe city.
