What's the best way to hook this filter up in "gravity flow" mode? Should I just attach a short hose to the bite valve and put a small clamp on the bite valve to open it?

You can remove the bite valve easily by a pulling/twisting motion. Easy does it. Water will then flow through uninterrupted.
I just received my Frontier Pro in the mail from BPL today.
So that others might learn from my mistake; in removing the bite valve, though I thought I was being gentle, I managed to crack the little plastic "nipple" it attaches to.
It seems to still be working fine (it's a smallish crack), and I don't expect any future problems, though I will have to baby it a bit from now on, I suspect.
Oh well, It's a <$20 item, and only good for 50 gallons.
I'm still happy with my purchase, and looking forward to using it in the field, but just thought I should second what Ben said above about
"Easy does it."
and add, pull straight, don't bend.
As always, YMMV.
I had little trouble pulling it straight off with a slight twisting motion. It did take more force than I had thought it would, though, and I WAS careful not to bend the plastic nozzle underneath as I pulled the bite valve off. I suspect that using the filter this way wasn't in the original design specifications, or it would probably be easier.
I just received my filter today, really excited about the size and it will be nice to get a quick drink and go. My understanding is the filter can be used as a gravity filter by hanging the bladder or bottle upside down. I haven't figured out out this works with the bite valve in place. Do you remove the valve or what am I not doing right.
thanks
there is a you tube video explaining how to use the Frontier Pro as a gravity filter. Basically you use chemicals and then use the Frontier Pro to take out the nasty chemical taste. Basically to make this work you pull off the bit valve. Search on this site, there is a thread about this
Hey thanks for the you tube tip, I'll check it out
I Filtered 3 Liters of water out of the lake in gravity mode and the filter halted to a drip.
I was not using the pre-filter (trying this resulted in it falling out in the dirty bag), but I wouldn't expect it to clog up so fast.
The flow is now very slow to non-existent and eventually just stops.
Any thoughts?
I think it might be my video that Ken is referring to: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wSYWoplv_Uo
You will be able to find said video on the product page here on Backpacking Light for the Frontier Pro next week.
