Reccomendations for 1/4 zip baselayer

Someone has to have some advice…

I have an Ibex Outback L/S shirt and I love it for cooler weather. I was fine in the low teens with only it and a MontBell Thermawrap (synthetic) on my torso.

I think most on this board would agree that merino wool is the goto material for baselayer versatility. That probably helps narrow your choices…

I also use the smartwool versa-zip. I love them both.

Most unlikely!

Sorry, but wool underwear is a recent fad and far less reliable than good synthetic thermals. Wool takes ages to dry and is fairly weak.

Mind you, there are a lot of very poor quality thermals on the market in America – or perhaps I should say poorly designed using inappropriate materials.

Roger I said "most". Not the most knowledgable, or the most adverse to fads.

It was my understanding that wool kept you warmer should it get wet (preferable to me since that is a worst case scernario). I would agree that wool is less durable than some synthetics…but I have had a mid-weight crew that has lasted several years and with the exception of sewing a small hole in the arm, it shows no sign of decline. It is far more comfortable and less likely to stink compared to my Patagonia capeline or even my OR blended synthetic t shirts (which I really like for warm weather)

I still hold that at least 50.00001% of regulars on this board prefer wool! Based on a very scientific and quantifiable source….

I'm a fan of wool for multi-day trips due to the relative lack of odor. The Woolies Zip-T is light weight and comfortable. I tested it for BackpackGearTest.org and had no durability issues over the four month test.

I'm a big fan of Icebreaker too.
