About 8 years ago I bought a Coleman Peak 1 stove… one of those stoves with a separate fuel bottle that you pump.
Works very well. Extremely reliable, has never failed to light, and you can buy unleaded petrol from anywhere to use as fuel…
Uh oh. Since joining this site I've discovered that unleaded fuel is extremely toxic (carcinogens etc). (Thanks to Coleman's for providing a clear warning on that… not). So I have apparently been poisoning my girlfriend and I with this stove.
So, no more unleaded petrol for me. I need to either start using this stove with kerosene (which I understand is safe?) or switch to a new stove.
Can anyone advise me on a good stove to use with kerosene? Or have you used the Peak 1 with kerosene? I think I have the special kero "generator" that I need to swap in.
Cannister stoves are not an option on many of my overseas trips (fuel availability), but I guess an alcohol stove is a possibility. Do they burn kerosene? What other fuels do not have toxic by-products?
Basically I want a stove that can pump out a good amount of heat (rules out most alcohol stoves probably), and uses a nice clean fuel which is readily available (including in developing countries).
Thanks for your help…
