Affordable suggestions

There are a wide varity of options. On the cheap side, a flat 8×10 tarp, and some some mosquito netting you can lay over yourselves. Slightly more expensive would be a commercial bug bivy or net tent, and a good tarp. Most expensive would be a tarptent from folks like six moon designs or tarptent.com. This time of year, ANYTHING with mesh is a good thing. Check out Six Moon Designs, Mountain Laurel Designs, Gossamer Gear, Tarptent for some ideas on design on price, then narrow your options when you're better armed with details.

There is a large range of possibilities. cheapest would be a 8×10 tarp and some netting that you could suspend from a ridge line. Next up would be a tarp with a self-supporting bug bivy like made by A16 or a small bug tent. Most expensive would be one of the commercial tarptents that have already been mentioned. I went with the Six Moon Designs Gatewood Cape (11 ounces) combined with their new(ish) Serenity NetTent (7 ounces) after looking at all the various options to replace my MSR Hubba (a great tent IMO) with something lighter.

I really enjoy falling asleep under the stars when it's not raining, so having bug protection separate from rain protection was important to me, and the reason I've avoided a single wall shelter.

Now I can fall asleep enjoying the sorts of views that motivate me to backpack in the first place, while not being bitten, AND with the satisfaction of having turned my trekking poles (which I always carry anyway) into dual use items, obviating the need for carrying (single use) tent poles.
