Hex 3 with TiGoat pole

I have been useing the pole exstention from Golite that is 15.5 in. and weighs 1.4 oz. Used between two trekking poles. I got caught a very, very windy and rainy storm by Carson Pass, Sierras. 3-4 hour storm. I had a 4yr old with me. I would say the Hex and that pole extention was BOMBPROOF. No proplems- I was exspecting the worse but No Worries!! Got to love the wind resistent pyramid shape.

I set up the Hex3 with the extension pole and an Alpkit Carbonlite trekking pole one winter night in my backyard and the next day after about 18" of medium density snowfall heard a strange thud in my dinning room and looked out to see the tent lying flat on the ground. The lowest section of the Carbonlite had snapped in two(ouch, almost $30 to get a replacement section shipped from GB, though their service was prompt, just a few mouse clicks to order). I now have the TGP's and feel they are less stiff then the Alpkits and would not at present use them on the hex. I would still consider caring the Alpkit Carbonlite with the extension for the Hex3, instead of the GoLite aluminum pole, just remembering to knock the snow off occasionally. With wind and rain I think it would have been OK. The snow was very heavy in trying to pick up the tent, I could not without first sweeping most of it off first.

By the way it was relatively easy to fix the Alpkit with a profiled wooden plug and nylon tape (with the longitudinal strands in it). Not very pretty but functional.

I'm thinking the TiGoat AGP's might not be strong enough to use on the Hex 3. I don't have the heavy snow fall that others get. It's the high winds that i'm worried about. I think I'll keep the AGP's for the tarp, and use aluminium poles for the Hex 3.

I use a Hex 3 often. And I too found that ultra light poles may flex unduly.

Now I use a luxurylite.com Big Stik assembly to set it up. Rock solid!

If possible for you i'd recommend selling your trekking poles and GoLite center pole. Then purchase a couple of Big Stiks (assorted lengths and sizes available by calling mr. warren).

Once you learn how to use them (think outside the box and explore the many other uses for LL poles) and realize the warranty, etc, is exemplary (probably because LL gear is bombproof) you'll never look back.
