Yeah, those reviews are mixed. I wonder if GG has changed the foam or used different manufacturers over the years. Mine has done well and I have never noticed significant irreversible loft compression. Of course it is not as comfy as a thicker foam or inflatables.
The ridgerest will have a higher R value and will be more cushy at the cost of weighing more. I hike with some people who do like their ridgerests.
I use pieces of the Walmart blue foam pads for sit pads. It's okay, but never seemed to match evazote to me. The target blue foam that I tried was not as good as Walmarts. I took the target foam back and got a refund. Those stores probably get foam from different manufacturers so YMMV.
