If you are hard to fit nothing beats going with a McHale pack. They are custom fitted and built for your individual measurements. His packs are expensive, durable and not UL but many people on BPL have gotten McHale packs in the 2.5-3lb range. Mine carries a lot better than anything else I've ever used.
Hey James, Check out ULA- Ultra Lite Adventure. They make custom backpacks according to your torso, hips, shoulders. There in Utah. They make excellent backpacks. Google them!
I have a 21.37" back measurement. Other than my custom made McHale 36LBP, I've found that the two MLD packs I have in TALL fit me really well. I'd recommend either the Ark or Exodus from MLD (if you can wait for it), or else a ULA Catalyst which has slightly larger sizes than the rest of the ULA line.
My torso is 21.5 and it's plenty long for me. But I reckon an inch is an inch is an inch.
