Backpacking Around Vancouver and Victoria Island

In August I am going to the Vancouver area in Canada to look at possibilities of moving there. I'll be there at least two weeks, possibly three and will probably have from one to two weeks time for backpacking. Can anyone recommend a nice trail that I should try? Anything that might be a good introduction to the area? (I used to live in Oregon, so I know the climate and terrain quite well)

I am new to BC so I haven't tried any of these trails my self but here are a few to consider.

The TransCanada trail is now complete, recent articles indicate that the Myra Canyon section from Kelowna down to Penticton is the nicest stretch of the trail. You can find more information here.

In Vancouver you are only a few hours from the West Coast Trail which is by far the best hiking trail in Canada. They allow for 10 unreserved hikers per day so you might be able to just show up and get in a hike.

The sunshine coast is an amazing place and would be a good place to go exploring. Similar coast line scenery as the WCT but much less harsh and better weather.

Wells Grey National Park is a little further of a drive but the Waterfalls are suppose to be amazing.

A little closer to home (Vancouver) there are a bunch of trails but probably the most well known one is the Grouse Grind, it will only take you an afternoon but it is one you will certainly remember. I see that the trail is currently closed but hopefully it will be open in time for you trip.

In addition to the West Coast Trail mentioned already, you may wish to consider the Juan de Fuca Trail, Strathcona Provincial park and Cape Scott Provincial Park. Some good old fashioned rigorous and beautiful hiking in these places. I'm sure a search for British Columbia provincial parks will give you all you need to know.
I too find it a bit odd that no one from BC has responded. Hell – I'm from the other end of the country! Give them time.

I just came back from a week on the Island. Drove into the Pt. Hardy Cape Scott area from nanaimo. Hiked out to San Josef and Mt St patrick the first day. Next day got a water taxi to the North Coast Trail start in Shushartie. Hiked the trail ( brand new opened in May) for 3 days to reconnect with Cape Scott area and then explored further along the Cape Scott area. Got a shuttle service to pick us up at the Cape Scott trailhead morning of the 5th day. An extra day or two would of been nice. Beautiful, wild place. I highly recommend it.
