One of the best Canadian retailers (with good house brand stuff too) is Mountain equipment co-op.
prolitegear.com ships to Canada
I`ve had good luck with smaler retailers or some of the large ones. Usualy if their normal sized and they quote you something excessive you can usually get a fair price on shipping by asking for regular post.
I should add that Prolite gear is not one of those retailers.

Retailer of what? What are you wanting to purchase? I'm from Canada and I buy almost everything from BPL, GG, and MLD… but those are one of a kind items you can't buy anywhere else. For general stuff, I've bought stuff from Prolite and even REI once. The most obvious answer is the MEC. The only reason I don't buy anything online from the MEC is because I'm lucky enough to have one in my home town.
Like David, I have an MEC across the street – I was just there today in fact.
But, when it comes to the UL stuff, you just have to suck it up and pay. I have dealt with most of the cottage manufactureres and haven't had any shipping problems other then having to pay fees when the item gets here.
