I have just bought a Regular-sized (18-21" torso) GG Vapor Trail, as my torso measures at exactly 21". However, after having tried it on, I just don't know whether it indeed is the right size for me. How does one assess the correct size of a backpack?

I have added some pics below.Exhibit 1Exhibit 2

Hi Erwin,

Judging from the photos, that looks like a pretty good fit. You might want to see if you can either tighten the shoulder straps down a bit more or drop the hip belt down an inch lower on your hips (it should bisect your iliac crest)in order to get the straps to wrap a little more cleanly over you shoulders, but the fit you have looks pretty good.

Also, you might want to tighten down the compression straps in order to prevent the contents of your pack from rolling around loose. This might make it more comfortable too.

Is it unfortable? What in particular seems off to you?

The packs looks short for you. Click here for an excellent REI video on fitting a backpack. Compare the top load lifter straps (the part about 45 degree angle) — to your own photos above.

OTOH, the GG VT is not a traditional pack but a UL type pack, so it may wear differently. Other VT owners will hopefully add their insights.

It does look borderline for size and most people normally size up. As has already been mentioned, make sure that the hip belt is centrally located on the Iliac Crest. This pack is not long enough without totally extending the extension to even come close to waranting load lifters… I had a similar Nimbus Ozone. My 21.5" McHale LBP doesn't use load lifters since it is a Guide harness and fits much the same as your photo.

All, thanks for your insights. Upon lowering the backpack on my hips, it definitely feels like it's too short. I will replace it with a Large.

Ben is right the pack is too small for you. Sizing up is needed on this one. Keep in mind that you do not wear the hip belt to bear a heavy load…say a conventional backpack. You will find however that this pack is a joy to use and is very comfortable.

Geez. Shows you what I know. Good thing the rest of you guys set Erwin (and me!) straight.

I can't help but think that my opinion of Erwin's photos is influenced by the fact that most packs are a little short on me too given my height.

Sorry Erwin! Didn't mean to steer you wrong.
