I've had a GSI Bugaboo cookset for about 8 years and it has served me well. It's not ultra-light but you can fry stuff without sticking and cleaning is a breeze. I'm a bit of a gourmet backpacker so I don't mind the extra weight penalty.

However, I'm now getting a little bit of wear on the surface of the pan (after 8 years) and given the health concerns about teflon thought I should probably replace it since it's getting a bit old (might break down quicker?).

There's now a new version out (in addition to the Bugaboo) which is "Hard Anodized Extreme". The main difference appears to be that the alumnium is anodized before the non-stick coating is added, and that 3 non-stick coats are added instead of 2.

Has anyone used the Hard Anodized Extreme version? Or should I just stick with what I know? I'm not entirely sure what the benefit of anodization is, since I don't intend to abuse my pots to the point where the aluminium surface would be exposed…

There are no health concerns about the ordinary USE of Teflon as cook-ware. There was some hassle over the manufacturing process, since resolved I believe.

If it bothers you just get the plain hard anodized surface. That does not have Teflon or anything similar added.
Having said that, I have used their new for 2008 Backpackers set that has the coated pans. They do work very well and are light for their size (unlike the older versions). It is what I use in my one pot meal videos we make.
