So we all talk about how great an investment down is in our sleeping bags. That with care it will last decadaes.

We also have pretty well established that synthetics when compressed will lose part of their loft over time.

So I certainly love down, but was wondering if anyone has any info on down compression over time?

Can you just rejuvinate it with a wash in the appropiate cleaner like if it got dirty from sweat/oils?

Can down lose loft from compression like synthetics? Experience seems to say no on this one.

So while I will continue to store my down bag very loosely I am curious to get any info on how bad a super stuffed bag really is. Stuffing for trips is one thing, but how bad would just leaving it stuffed really be?

After paying a fortune for our high fill power down bags — fortunately, maintenance is easy. All you need to do are:

1. Avoid storing the bag in a compressed state. You can hang it (like they do in stores), lay it flat, or simply store it in the big cotton sack that your bag came with. The stuff sack should only be used when backpacking.

2. Keep the bag clean and dry at all times. Body oils can interfere with down lofting — so wash it in accordance with instructions from time to time. To minimize the need for a wash, use your bag either with a liner, or wear long johns and liner socks.

That's pretty much it, really.
