Allison Miller threatened to inform Roger about my posting a gear post to the Chaff forum unless I moved the information here forthwith! So here it is, Japanese mesh underwear!

Finetrack, a Japanese company that makes gear for “sawanobori” ( creek climbing ) makes special mesh underwear that allows perspiration to quickly leave the body while at the same time making water from outside run off like water on a duck’s back. I’ve been using one of their short sleeve mesh undershirts and underpants especially for use with my Paramo jacket and pants and Rab Vapor Trail smock. Because both system rely on active moisture movement from the inside to the outside and work best on bare skin the mesh underwear works wonderfully in conjunction with them. Pertex-Pile systems like that of the Rab Vapour-Trail clothes and those of Buffalo and Montane work best when one is not wearing any clothes underneath, but I dislike boarding trains to the trailheads here in Japan wearing nothing underneath, so the mesh underwear solves the problem.

The least no-see-um underwear might do is keep away pesky bugs! ;-P

Hey, thanks for posting.

For non-Japanese speakers here's a Google translated link (not that this helps a lot, but…):

http://www.google.com/translate?u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.finetrack.com%2Fproduct%2Fproduct_floodrush_skin_mesh.html&hl=en&ie=UTF8&sl=ja&tl=en

$45 and 2 oz.

How's the smell factor?

It looks like they're saying the fabric's water-repellancy is good for 100 washes. But it's not clear if this is due to a chemical DWR or the fabric composition/texture.

You ever think of posting reviews of your Finetrack stuff?

I'd be interested to hear more about the Floodrush Skin Mesh and Breeze Wrap (looks like pretty cool material).

Also, can you wear the Floodrush mesh over, rather than under, a merino baselayer? I'm thinking this may be another line of defense to keep the baselayer dry when using a 'softshell' system.

I had mesh long johns in 1976. They were popular for winter use – back then we used them under regular long johns to help with perspiration and to create an air barrier between the two layers. I think they are in the box with my Micheal Jackson red zipper jacket and glove – I'll check.
