I couldnt find a dedicated thread on weight saving a combination of visor and a towel offers over other systems (ball cap, full rim cap, etc).
I have always worn baseball cap but it just occured to me that with WP visor and towel used as bandana with DWR on 'outer' side would make a weatherproof system.
Choice of towel would be important. I have always used cotton towel but a microfiber towel will be better choice as it will absorb much more water and dry faster.
I've been testing out the idea of combining a lightload towel with my visor during my spring treks. I stitched 1/4"-ish pieces onto the towel, and have larger velcro attachment points on my visor for the towel and a light.
Not weather proof, or DWR etc, but similar in that it involves combining my towel and visor. I'd probably carry a separate DWR sheet if I wanted to rig up some rain protection on my visor. The weight difference would be minimal, and the performance of the towel wouldn't be compromised.
While I use hooded raingear, I've been pretty happy just tooling around in the backcountry with a white Pearl Izumi visor and a white and gray Buff for headgear, especially in the summer. When I hit a stream crossing, dipping the Buff in the water keeps the visor dry and the ol' melon nice and cool.
cameron, thats neat. But just wondering – doesnt keeping your hair unprotected from sun concern you?
I am planning to use hooded jacket too so I guess DWR is not really needed.
