I'm trying to gauge how good the packaging choices at resupply points near long trails has gotten.
Are foil pouches &/or pop-top cans almost always available, or is carrying a can-opener on long hikes still a good idea ?
Thanks.

I seldom carry canned goods away from a resupply store. However, I have been known to grab a can of fruit cocktail to eat outside of the store before resuming my journey. I don't have a can opener on my knife (when I carry a knife) so I carry a P38 GI-type can opener.
Mostly on the trail I crave something with a lot of flavor. Like green olives. These often come in jars and can be dumped in a ziplock.
OH YEAH! I carry a larger version of the P-38 GI can opener and use it for exactly the purpose described – namely pigging out in a resupply town on fruit cocktail, cling peaches, pears (my favorite) or whatever else strikes my fancy. Once it was even a can of stewed tomatoes. (One gets strange "trail cravings" sometimes.)

Another vote for the P-38
If you readers don't have one yet; suggest you get one : )

In the spirit of multi usage. Remove the steel striker from your firesteel and use your P38 instead. It's lighter and mine seems to produce a larger spark!
When using the P38 with the striker, are you using the long blunt side away from the "opener" portion? I suspect you are but wanted to ask.
