I like to wear mesh sandals (1 ounce a piece) around camp. The only problem is that they offer no protection against bugs. Does anyone know of any booties (or over-socks) that would be breathable, but protect against bugs? I was thinking of making my own (out of uncoated nylon) but wondered if anyone made such things.

These are the only ones I’ve ever found: Coghlans Bug Socks.
I've made my own bug booties out of uncoated nylon since Adirondacks mosquitoes bite right through my trail runners and liner socks, at least at night in camp. they work fine and are easy to make, once you get a pattern. I used a fleece sock pattern (for stretch fabrics!) and modified it over several prototypes into a pattern for non-stretch fabrics. the shape is much different. If you happen to be close to a men's 12 I have a picture of the pattern on a 1" grid I could send you a link too.

this pattern could also be a starting point for a different size foot, just change the size accordingly and prototype on cheap fabric. it doesn't have much ankle coverage, so maybe add a couple inches of length to the ankle too.
directions:
top left piece is the heel, curved edge goes down. top right piece is the bottom, the tabs on the left line up with the tabs on the bottom of the heel piece. the long piece is the top and front of the ankle. sew the curve of the heel (below the tabs) onto the curve of the bottom (behind the tabs) then fold the heel piece back on itself, and then sew the top piece on all the way around. hem the top. try on an make sure it fits, if not make adjustments.
Excellent information from both of you. I appreciate it very much.
Thanks a lot for posting the template for your design, Jeremy!
This should prove very useful.
Since I’m mostly a sandal hiker, this is an item I do worry about. I wear a thin coolmax sock that that has been sprayed with permethrin. Mosquitoes and ticks sure hate it!
