Any suggestions for the longest, fattest (and, of course, lightest) skis? I'm no lightweight, and with my winter pack I tend to sink in our local fluffy powder. I'm almost to the point of just buying two snowboards and putting a single boot-mount on each. Does anybody make outriggers for skis?

I have Karhu Metas and Karvers. They float better than my BC skis, but aren't very long. I was just looking at something from Fischer that are 192cm with a 139/101/128 profile but they weigh a ton. I just picked up a pair of Volkl Sanouks, 193 x 130/110/120, that are much lighter. They're really monster steep powder skis, so it feels wrong to harness these thoroughbreds to the touring plow.

Are there any other candidates out there suitable for backcountry touring in fluff? I'd really like something along the lines of the Karhu Guide, but its shovel is only 110 wide. I would like a light wood core and fish-scales, but as far as I can tell nobody makes anything like that which has the width needed for serious float.

You might want to try something like this
Hunting skis
These are hunting skis and 15 cm wide.
I have no experience with anything like this and the binding looks silly, but they might be replaceable.
I don't know if it's a scandinavian phenomenon, or if something like this exists elsewhere, but if you find a hunting page or forum you might get some answers.

The Goode CARBON 116 is a "Super-Wide" ski designed for powder snow conditions. The large surface area gives you huge "float" across the snow. Available in two lengths (163cm and 183cm). Ski color: Black Carbon Fiber Weave / Blue Graphics
LENGTH TIP WAIST TAIL SIDECUT RADIUS

163cm 138mm 116mm 124mm 8mm 32m (1130g WEIGHT/SKI)
183cm 139mm 116mm 123mm 8mm 42m (1270g WEIGHT/SKI)

I own a couple of skis that would probably meet your criteria:

DPS Lotus 138

Goode BC 95

Goode also makes fatter versions, the BC 106 and BC 116.

I have a full review of them here:

For fun in deep powder, I can't imagine that you will find anything better than the DPS Lotus 138. However, the Goodes are more versatile.

I enjoyed your web site. Have you tried the Salomon Teneighty Gun Skis? Mine are 188 cm long, 135 mm at the tips, 101 mm at the waist, 126 mm at the tail, about 9 pounds for the pair, and I love them.

Yeah, search the telemarktips forums, as there have been threads about fat/light skis. There's even someone that made a table I think. Your best options are the carbon ones discussed above, …but another excellent, cheaper option is the Voile Insane. Widths vary depending on the length you get. Amazingly light. I used to have BD Havocs, which are considered to be a light ski (88mm waist), in 173cm length, ..i replaced them with 183cm Voile Insanes (108mm waist, 150mm tip is HUGE), and the Insanes are still a little lighter!

You can make your own fish scales (there might be a telemarktips thread on that too). I have a friend that has gotten very professional looking results with a drill press.

Oh yeah, and next year Voile is coming out with the Asylums, even fatter, and i think only in 193cm length.

I've not used the 10-80 Guns, but I'm a big fan of the Salomon Pocket Rocket for soft snow conditions.

I own a pair of Goode BC116 and they are indeed superlight and really float in the powder. Not so good on anything with a slick surface as they are so light it's impossible to get an edge. The El Hombres, if you can get past their hideous graphics, are a great all-around fat ski – 106 in the waist I think. Not particularly lightweight however.
