I just received a tarp that was supposed to weigh 18.5 oz (its a large tarp)but my Pitney Bowes machine puts the actual weight at 23 oz. I've been told that I tend toward the literal, but it seems that a 24% difference is extreme. I'd like to know if others have had this issue, and how manufacturer's have responded.
And, no, I'm not going to reveal the company in this forum since all of my other purchases have been very positive.
My experience is most companies weights are a bit over…never under…24% is too much though. The only company I have found to be "spot on" is Mont-Bell. Their weights have never been different by more then 1/10th an once.
I find that most cottage gear makers are pretty darn honest with their specs. Of the bigger companies, I completely agree that MontBell specs are accurate as well.
As for most "mainstream" brands, you can almost count on their specs to be off — and it's never in your favor. Marmot and Sierra Designs come to mind, but the list is actually a rather long one.
Sounds like a 10'x10' 3 person tarp to me…

Feathered Friends always seemed to exaggerate the weight of their sleeping bags (if not their clothing). That was before they updated their web site though. Until this year, parts of their web site would suggest that their down wasn't as good as what their store was selling. Likewise, it was difficult to find the latest material ("NanoSphere"). I'm not sure if their web site now lists accurate measurements or not.
