I'm looking at replacing my venerable (in my terms) Fairydown Goretex Paclite rain shell with something lighter & simpler (it has pit zips, unusable pockets, and is too big). It also has an adjustable hood (front stretch drawcords & a rear volume adjusting drawcord).

The OR Zealot & the ID eVent rain jacket both look good, but the hoods on both make me hesitate. Unfortunately I can't try either on so any help on here would be appreciated.

I usually wear a cap under the hood, so a lack of a brim doesn't bother me – but in high wind I really want the hood to stay on! And I don't want it obscuring my vision in any way. Right now with the adjustable hood on my current jacket both these things are ok: I'm worried that the with something like the elastic hood on the ID jacket there's no way it will stay on in the wind. Or does zipping up to the chin give it a good degree of tightness?

I have a Zealot and have used it with a peak cap. My biggest concern is the breathability as a result I prefer to use a poncho and a wind shirt.

However, it is a great coat and one I carry when I am carrying a tent instead of a poncho tarp.
