Wont wind and rain get in when the zips are opened? As much as I like the idea of better ventilation I cannot imagine what use this storm shells would be in storms with side zips opened.

Depends on your locale, but most of the rainstorms I've endured aren't really windy and nasty. I'm talking about those all day long rains. In these condtions, the sidezips allow massive ventilation; they can even be worn over your hipbelt, poncho-style. If it's really nasty, zip 'em closed; pitzips would leak in those conditions too, so it's a push on that front.
