Gossamer Gear Lightrek II on the AT?

I knew someone on the AT last year who thru-hiked with a pair,so I'd guess that they're definitely durable for a section hike through one state. You'll obviously adore their lack of weight, and every other hiker who isn't down with UL backpacking will envy your poles. Really, I've seen it happen.

Thanks Eric. The only reason I brought this question up was that GG remarks say that the are recommended for moderate conditions. I was looking for some actual experience with them.

I put my lightreks II through 1300 miles of AT last summer and had no problems with them other than i had first generation (i think?) very soft grips, which they sent me out new ones when i wore through them in 400 miles, also the tips wore down fast. but considering your doing a shorter chunk it shouldn't be a problem. however i must worn you i'm 140 IBs and carried a sub 20 pack. but they did save me bum when i started to get my shin splints, i put a lot of weight on them on the downhills and had no problems. the biggest thing in their favor is the fact that since they dont have straps, to break them you either have to tweak them in a rock wedge, or fall on them weird. for me i dont have the kung-fu grip to break them just by pushing on them. and in a fall situation i just drop them and use my hands. well i should be up to NH in late June, i'll be the guy with the matching Hawaiian shirt and shorts :D

I carried LightTrek's for the first part of my thru last summer. They made it from Springer to Damascus, and then one of them got caught in a car door while getting a hitch. They seemed to hold up alright to that point; the points wore down quickly, but the shafts themselves seemed sturdy. BUT, they are very sensitive to sideways pressure (as opposed to normal load along the shaft). When mind cracked, one of the poles was just sticking out of a car door, and I reached out and gently pulled the door towards me until the default pressure of the door kicked in, if you know what I mean, and gently shut on the pole. It was just a little clink, and I didn't think anything of it, but when I looked a few minutes later the carbon fiber was clearly splintered and looked like it wouldn't last.

So, just be careful with them.

I would subject that trail hiking (even in the Whites) is "moderate conditions" by most definitions. The bane of any pole is snapping it after loading it with the tip stuck in a hole (like a talus slope), so caution is warranted there with any design. Just a thought.
