I just got back from using my gigapower during a windy 2 day mini-trip with the kids during their spring break. The wind gusts only felt "medium", and didn't cause any tent deflection (but would roll it slowly along the ground if it wasn't staked). The weather forecast was for 25-50 mph winds in the evenings and about half that in the mornings. I think they were about 1/2 that though (at most).
I tried to shield the stove in a corner between a cliff and the tent. When that didn't work, I also used my Wisperlite windscreen – raised about 2 inches at the bottom to prevent overheating. We also used the packs and people as windbreaks.
Even with all that, the stove took much longer than usual to heat the water, and you could hear it sputtering with each wind eddy. (The canister was 3/4 full so that wasn't the source of the sputtering). The wind gusts created eddy's from different directions about 10 times per minute.
The temperatures were mild for this time of year, high almost 50 degrees (F) and a low of only 30. I think it was around 35-38 degrees when we were cooking.
For the number of people I have, I need to heat 4 cups of water at a time (twice) per meal – times 2 meals per day (for a total of 16 cups per day). About half needs to be hot enough to cook 1/4" wide noodles in a cozy). The other half just needs to be hot enough to make hot cocoa.
Would a Caldera cone work better than the Gigapower with this much water, in 25 mph winds with 35 degree temps ? Or would I be better off just making a taller, more enclosing windscreen for the canister stove with holes punched on only 1 side (assuming I can usually find a "downwind" side…)
