I am planning on buying a Steripen very soon, already purchased the Steripen pre-filter for wide mouth nalgene bottles. I discovered that according to REI as well as the instructions that comes with the pre-filter, that the pre-filter is not compatible with the Steripen Adventurer, only with the original (heavy) Steripen.

On the other hand, the new Steripen Journey that comes out in April, is listed as being compatible, ie; will mate with, the Steripen pre-filter. This sounds good, but the Steripen Adventurer is lighter than the Journey and Adventurer is also cheaper.

Adventurer: lightest, cheaper than Journey, not compatible with pre-filter

Journey: slightly heavier, about $30 more expensive, compatible with pre-filter.

I want to order now and am having trouble holding off on the Adventurer cause its available now. Which do experienced Steripen users recommend?

thanks,

Eric

I use the Adventurer with a flexible 1L Nalgene Cantene and steripen prefilter. At first I was bummed that the Adventurer wouldn't mate with the prefilter but later found that removing the filter from the cantene to stir the water with the Steripen isn't a hassle for me. Either way, you will still need to remove the prefilter from the container when you want to drink or dump the water into a bladder.

IMHO, the Steripen is much much better than using a pump with a filter or chemicals and very much worth the small weight penalty.

The extra convenience of the Journey might be nice but would the LCD be subject to cracking and hard to read in bright light? Not sure which way I would go if I was buying new. I really could do without the LCD though.

I sent them an email earlier this year asking about a pre-filter for the adventurer. Here is Hydro-photons reply.

Hi there Jason! There is one in development and we hope to have some form of announcement come summer! Please don't hesitate to keep in touch for
updates!

All the best,

If they are coming out with a pre-filter for the Adventurer this summer, I think Id rather have the Adventurer as its lighter and cheaper than the Journey.

I have used the Steripen Classic on a 10 day hike in 2006 and the Steripen Adventurer on a 15 day hike in 2007 in the High Sierras (SEKI). We had two Steripen Classics in 2006 and one failed 4 days into the trip. If you get any moisture inside the glass chamber, it fails. I contacted Steripen and they told me the Adeventurer was engineered with many goals, including making it much more waterproof than the SteriPen Classic and they offered me a professional discount to give it another try, which I used in 2007 for 15 days. It worked fantastic. Without a doubt, I'd go for the Steripen Adventurer. What I used for a homemade prefilter was a MSR coffee filter from REI which fits inside the mouth of a nalgene widemouth bottle. http://www.rei.com/product/726094?vcat=REI_SEARCH

It works just fine for getting rid of small sediment. It's not any good for muddy silt but then again, I was in SEKI where that is not a problem, one uses mountain runoff water where only clear water with maybe some sediment is involved.
Believe me, do not go for the SteriPen Classic, unless Steripen re-engineered that which if they did I am not aware of it. As for the adventurer, it's great. A fully loaded (new battery) Steripen worked 4-6 times a day — at the resupply point, I changed batteries. I carried an extra battery(ies) but none were needed.

I'm doing the JMT in 2008 and will take the Steripen Adventurer with me then.

Yeah, I wasnt considering the Steripen classic anyway. That thing is way too heavy, Id rather just use chemicals than lug that big thing around. Ive never been a filter guy…ever. I dont even use coffee filters, just use chemicals…either iodine tabs or chlorine dioxide.

But the Steripen Adventurer is light enough to consider, but it wont mate with the pre-filter. What is up with that?

Thats why I'm considering holding off on the Journey. But I'm really tempted to just buy the Adventurer. Unlike some, I actually believe in purifying my drinking water but I like to do things right.

(bump)

After reading the email above from Hydro-Photon, I emailed them again asking about a new pre-filter with Adventurer compatibility.

Looks like we'll need to check back in 6 months. Maybe for the '09 season?

Their email is below:

I am sorry to say that we still do not have a Pre-Filter for the Adventurer yet. It is something that we had planned to have for this season, but its progress has been delayed. I should have better news if you check back in about 6 months.
