REI Jet UL pack

I have one and like it a lot. It's not as light per volume as a GoLite, Gossamer Gear, etc., but it makes a good day pack. The compression system works well and the frame sheet is quite stiff–both useful when you're not carrying a full load, or are carrying odd-shaped things (camera gear, binoculars, etc.) REI's approach to hydration support is light, minimal, and works–two "buttons" that the bladder hangs from (works best with a Platypus) instead of a heavier sleeve. Having a pocket on top is nice, since stuffing the pack full doesn't encroach on its size, as is the case with the Jam2/Gust pocket.

Thanks, I will probably just go down and check it out. Im thinking about removing the lid and replacing it with a sil-nylon extention collar, but it depends on the construction whether its worth the trouble or not.
Also, the REI Zip travel pack dont look so bad either.
It has low capacity -lower than my Ion but the pockets might make it usable for an overnight, depends how big the pockets are.

If you're interested in REI's minimalist packs, try to check out the Flash UL too. It doesn't have pockets like the zip and probably lacks the potential to be used as an over-nighter, but it works great as a stuff sack/day pack that you can use for peak bagging. Plus it's really cheap too.

I bought one today to be my go-to day pack for shorter trips. A bargain with the 20% off coupon :-) I was actually happy it had no internal hydration sleeve as I use bottles.

If a person wanted to they could take off the accessory straps quite easily as well on the outside.

The clinchers where the price and the fact that it just fit me so well ( I got a 17 1/2-18 inch torso )
It is nice, and with some imagination I think I might just get it under a pound. The 1.5 inch webbing on the hip belt can go right away, some back padding can go -but it might get tricky, and I think the lid can be replaced by a sil-nylon extention collar.
Ill hold off on any major mods for a while, its better to use a pack for a while before you do- Ive learnd that the hard way!
