best way to link trekking poles for tarp support- help

Take a look on the MLDgear.com site at the Mids and you'll see a pic of how to do it with 10' of guyline.

With a loop on the end of the line, cinch the ground tip of the top pole, pass the line through the lower pole's handle strap and pull tight to set the length. Then wrap the poles together.

Fast and works great for no weight.

A few months ago I posted how I do it with my Hex 3. A brief summary:

If you have 3-section poles, and can remove the tip of one of the poles:

1) remove the lowest section from one pole (the section containing the tip).

2) On the second pole, remove the tip (I can remove the tip from my Black Diamond poles by stepping on the basket and lifting up on the pole — the entire casing comes off the aluminum shaft.

3) Insert the lowest section from the second pole (tip removed) into the hole of the first pole.

This should create one long, solid rod, with both ends containing the grips. Adds zero weight and is extremely stable.

Look at the BD pole coupler, works well, light, doubles as a stake bag if you want.

I own the Shangri-La 3 and use a Golite trekking pole extender with an adjustable pole. It weighs ~1.6oz and it’s on sale for 7$ I use some duct tape around the tip of the pole to get a snug fit.

I bought a long piece of alum tube at hardware store and can make many golite style extenders for $15. 5 min with a hacksaw and a file and you're done. For longer lengths I use the BD pole connector that came with my megalight pyramid. My Leki ski poles have a threaded bolt and socket that screw together to connect 2 poles. I do like the MLD cord technique though I haven't tried it.
