There have been a few discussions lately about Soft Shell type trekking pants. If you are looking to buy Marmot.com has two styles, the Appalacian and Hueco Pants, for $55. These are both 94%Nylon/6% Elastane which is a great stretch material for trekking pants.

Those are not softshell fabrics according to their website…
Look at these soft shell pants
I purchased a pair for my brother at Christmas. He used them for a day of skiing and liked them. The fabric is slightly stretchy like the Patty Jackalope pants only slightly thicker.
Thanks for the input John. Any other input? Fabrics of the makeup "94% Nylon/6% elastane" are often understood to be, or referred to as, part of the "softshell" family of fabrics. I don't see a DWR treatment listed but just use a wash-in treatment and these are just as much a "softshell" as most other pants marketed by other companies. Hope this is useful to someone looking for a cheap pair of comfortable/stretch trekking pants.
Thanks for the link Chris! Those look like another good option. I am a big fan of the Patagonia Jackalope pants as well and think this fabric makeup is much more comfortable for trekking pants then supplex or plain nylon. The Jackalope pants never seem to be in stock so a list of other cheaper options should be useful to everyone here.
