Josh, honestly, I'm totally at fault for my current misery. I'd packed in a hurry for the trip and didn't apply any special consideration to the geography of the trail: I always wear shorts, so shorts it was; I'd long since paired down my med kit, so the Tecnu wasn't available. But, learning from this, I'm completely undaunted and I'll be back to explore the wild beauty of Big Sur with pants and Tecnu and lots of precaution.
