If you insert them at a 45 degree angle they should hold your guyline without any hooks or loops. But I would suggest that you insert a little loop through the slot to pull them out with.

I carry one for use in soft ground. A small loop of TripTease through the hole is very useful for removal (and seeing in the dark). As Franco previously noted, stakes should always be inserted at a steep enough angle that the stake is in shear instead of the guy line trying to pull out the stake with every wind gust.

Depending on what type of guyline you use and how you pack your shelter, you could just run the guyline through the stake and tie a tautline hitch or similar knot. Then your stakes would always be attached to your shelter ready to go, and you would have adjustable guylines. You'd just have to be careful about how you pack it so as to avoid having the stakes puncture the fabric.

Those nail stakes work well on rocky or hard (compacted) soil, however they are almost useless on soft or sandy soil*. So leaving them attached to the guyline may not be the best approach. This is the reason why I usually have two or three types of pegs with me. Not two or three sets….
If I require 6 pegs than I will have 8 with me. The two that I don't use are the least suitable for the set up. The nail stake get used to make the hole for the softer type if I have to.
