Ive been noticing that a lot of people use a waistpack with thier pack- especially with the hipbeltless packs.
The more I think about it the more it makes sense. I would like to use it for storing emergency items and a few other odd items. But it needs to be as low bulk as possible while still enough room for all that stuff.
So.. what are you using?
P.S. I know there are older threads about this but Im having a hard time finding what Im looking for especially since you can call it a waistpack, hip pack, or fannypack!
Thank you

I actually like the el cheapo ($19.99) Eddie Bauer lumbar pack that I bought at Target.
After gutting out unnecessary straps and whatnot's, the weight is just 8 ounces. And yet, it holds the following comfortably:
1. two quart/liter size bottles in two side pockets
2. one 2.4L Platypus bladder in main compartment
3. shell jacket
4. small first aid kit plus sun block and DEET
5. flashlight
6. 2-3 Clif bars
Basically, it carries all the stuff I need for 3-season day hikes.
I went to Target a few weeks ago to see what they had,but they didnt seem to have as much as i remembered. I think it may be the wrong season?
The pack you describe sounds bigger than Im looking for.
I only need it big enough for an emergency kit, albeit a heaver one for deep backcountry use and mabey a few energie bars. Im not planning on carrying any water in it- i dont think.
Let me clarify a little more.
I basiclly want to keep my emergency items on my person instead of in a pack pocket like a hipbelt pocket. So it should be about the size of a genrous hipbelt pocket.
I was thinking that I could use one of GG or MLDs hipbelt pockets and just put some webbing with a buckle on them.
But, I wanted to see if there was any other options first.
