I have been comfortable in my trail runners down to about 20-30F depending upon the socks I was using. I am also comfortable in my waterproof mid length Pulse Merrell hiking boots below that but have not been able to test the bottom limit as it doesn't get below 10F around here anymore. What temperature have most people found their hiking boots to be comfortable to? I don't want to get any mountaineering boots just to keep my feet warm in really cold environments because they are way too pricey and the Sorels are just too big and clumsy.

My winter boot is the Waterproof Merrel Radius Mid. I think they are probably pretty similar to the Pulse…I think. I use 2 socks and have never had a problem. The only time my feet get cold are a) I broke through ice and got a soaker b) in the morning when I put my boots on. I'm not sure how alike our boots are, but these are my beefiest boots (I was out in -19C/-2.2F the other day)and I think you would be good with them. Of course, you have to wear the appropraite sock combo to back it up. I wear thin merino liner with goretex sock when my feet get cold and go with just a liner once they warm up.

Hey, thanks. I usually use two liners or a liner and a wool Bridgedale trekker for the really cold.
