Does this make sense? I usually hike in winter wearing a base layer and a pair of pants with knee high gaiters. That does me fine for all but the worst. Since I really don't need the full leg coverage, does anyone know where I could get some hard shell shorts to cover my thighs (waist to knees) when the weather picks up? Prefereably with side zips to slip on and off…am I dreaming?
Get out the scissors. Pick up a pair of Marmot Precip Full zip pants or whatever else you can find for cheap and start cutting. You can probably singe the edges with a lighter or fold it back and glue or sew it. I have thought of doing this myself. Never seen anything like this for sale in all my years.

I was just thinking of heading to MEC (3 min. walk) to grab full lengths and hack them up, then I thought…maybe someone makes one? Guess not. Probably leave in about an hour or so – anyone else want to chime in?

I am thinking that since shorts don't need to be super breathable, you may be able to buy wp/b rain pants at Wal Mart or similar for cheap — and cut off the pant legs.
Ben, good call!..I just came back from MEC, and the guy told me to go get a pair from walmart and cut the legs off…much better, and probably lighter then hacking the precips. No side zips though. :(

Mont Bell make Gore Tex shorts. Must say I always thought it was a bizarre idea, but that may be because I'd nearly always used Australian style knee-length Gore-Tex jackets, so with gaiters and a knee/mid-thigh length waterproof jacket there was no need for waterproof leg-wear, and it's less clammy too.
