for The Long Trail? I would think maybe June 1st? most likely would go NoBo
Dec 15, 2007 at 6:45 am #1412597If you start around June 1 the blackflies will probably be out in fullforce and it's usually pretty muddy. Then July is skeeters. If I had a choice I'd go in mid August or early September. It'll take the average hiker about 3-4 weeks (give or take)to complete the Long Trail.
Dec 15, 2007 at 6:49 am #1412598Thats a good point, I was thinking of heading out around that date as I graduate May 31, maybe still worth bearing through though…
Dec 15, 2007 at 7:18 am #1412600I started July 30th this year on my NOBO thru. Almost no bugs and resonable temperatures. Warm to almost hot in the southern part during the day. The low I encountered the northern section was 40F at "Puffer". The next few nights were also about the same since the capsites are all at higher elevations.
The only deterrent to this time frame is the "bubble" of AT hikers, both NOBO and SOBO in the joint southern 100 miles.
