Lightning vs Hubba Hubba vs SL3

Much of this is subjective, but for those who crave living space, I think the best two-person tent is a light weight 3-person — just as the best solo tent is a light weight 2-person. I also think that you'll be happier with two doors/vestibules rather than just one. Some light weight 3-person, 2-door tents that come to mind are:

REI Quarter Dome 3
Big Agnes Copper Spur 3UL
Big Agnes Emerald Mountain 3UL

Remember, you can always split the tent weight two ways — so why not enjoy a bit of space? But if you really want to cut down, a fairly OK two-person tent is the venerable REI Half Dome 2.

whichever one is on sale…I'd probably spring for the hubba hubba

I live in Virginia, own a Shires old style floorless Virga and also a Hubba Hubba. I enjoy the HH because of the roominess for 1 and it is very storm-worthy.(been there, done that) You may be cramped with 2 inside but do-able. I've also been in the Virga during some horrendous storms (downpours and 30 knot winds)and that too was very storm-worthy. I've also used the fly alone as shelter from the HH and loved that as well. Condensation in the Virga was minimal, but with only one person, it wasn't a problem. All that said, for 2 people, I would go with a 3 person tent, 2 doors. If there is an outfitter near you ( and I know most all in Va)go and set up an HH and put some gear in there and test it out. You'll then see if a 2-person is right for you.
