I just want to share a trip I have been mulling over for a couple seasons and hope to have a go at this summer. First, for those who haven't heard of it, the Uinta Mountains in Utah have a highline trail that traverses the range that is around 78 miles long, depending on where you start and who you ask. There are some very good write-ups about it out there including one by Paul Mags (http://www.pmags.com/east-to-west-uinta-highline-trail). The problem with this trail is logistics, the road distance between ends is daunting, and not a doable hitchhike for the solo traveler. That brings me to my route. loop It is possible to connect trails on the north side of the mountains to make a roughly 160 mile loop hike around the range, including almost all of the classic Highline Trail. While the north side is not as dramatic as the main trail on the south it is still very remote (no looking down on the highway like with the Collegiate loop here) and should prove rewarding in its own right, especially if done first. Including the start it passes through 5 trailheads on the north side but does not involve any road walking other than going through the trailheads. Because of the nature of the loop there are many options for shortening it if running behind without having to do a total bail and kill the trip. connections I did a section of the loop, East Fork Blacks to Island lake, a few years back and have a pretty good idea what I am in for. There are some trail sections that are not that well maintained, route finding can be a bit tricky in some of the meadows, there is no easy resupply and there is one pass on the east end with no trail but a well established route over it. But it is still doable and will provide a much wilder and less broken up trip than the Collegiate Loop that I did last season. I would love to hear from anyone who has travelled the north side and would like to share their experience. And for anyone who wants a closer look to play with here is a link for the Google Earth file: http://www.mediafire.com/download/d6d5cc4953uny3w/High_Uinta_Loop.kmz Thanks
