I'm interested in getting some perspective from those who have used both the Tarptent Contrail and the Protrail as to how different they are. If you've both, how would you compare them? Is the Protrail a marked improvement? In what ways? Is it significantly better vented? Is it significantly more storm-worthy? What features make it better in the wind? Easier/harder/the same to get it pitched just right? Thanks! Cheers, Bill

I've owned a Contrail years ago and used it for 4 years. I sold it for the Moment which I love. Seeing photos of the ProTrail I'd say it is a better tent for wind and solo camping. The Contrail was unnecessarily wide unless you are letting your dog sleep beside you. Hey, some backpackers like that option.

Is it significantly better vented? It has a much bigger vent at the rear. As a bonus you get a better view through that too. Is it significantly more storm-worthy? In theory (because I have not used the Pro Trail in rough weather yet) not for me because I was able to get a very storm worthy set up with the Contrail, but some didn’t . Here is a photo from someone else that also knew how to set the Contrail up for windy weather : Contrail The shape of the ProTrail is a bit more intuitive ,so it should be easier in this respect for most. ProTrailWhat features make it better in the wind? same as above Easier/harder/the same to get it pitched just right? Should be easier for most , very little difference for me. This is how I do the Pro Trail : ProTrail Set Up Have a read of Cam Honan’s (Swami) take on the two shelters. (Cam’s ProTrail in the above photo) http://www.thehikinglife.com/2014/11/tarptent-protrail-review/ BTW, I agree with him, the ProTrail has more usable room than the Contrail… franco@tarptent

Sorry for the bump but here’s my 2 cents

Protrail vs Contrail

To summarize; Protrail is better in every way except in dealing with wind. …harder to setup in windy conditions and the design is intrinsically less aerodynamic…..which is why I guess Henry put an extra guy out loop on each side of the shelter.  Overall great upgrade…..now if we can only get this guy to produce one in cuben….
