Looking for a windscreen for an alcohol / esbit setup that has closure tabs or built in connecting slots / tabs so I don't have to mess around with paper clips or similar…. preferably around 5 or so inches wide. I was going to purchase the following but their store isn't accepting orders: http://www.light-packing.com/catalog/inch-diameter-wind-screen-p-13.html. I also found the Suluk46 but am not dropping $39 shipped on a windscreen: http://www.suluk46.com/products%20%20-%20P19%20Anuri%20Titanium%20Windscreen.html I'm not interested in making one and the Toaks Titanium one I bought is too flimsy / thin for my taste and I thoroughly destroyed it trying to cut it … so probably preferring thicker titanium or aluminum …. Thanks in advance for any links you can provide!

There are lots of options out there, but I've had good luck with QiWiz titanium windscreens. I've used them with esbit and alcohol setups for a couple of years now with no problems. The method used to hold them in place is simple, but holds well. http://qiwiz.net/Windscreens.html

Bite the bullet snd get a Trail Designs caldera Cone stove. That design will save you a lot of fuel. I have the Sidewinder Ti stove so I can also burn wood. Mine is made for the 3 cup pot which is great for solo cooking. Just the right size and wide instead of tall for efficient fuel use. With a Brian Green's Blog improved ESBIT tab holder I have cut my ESBIT use by 30%. To me that saves a decent amount of weight and space in my pack.

Thanks Shawn! Bought one of those …. I hear you Eric but just want to get a super small setup that fits in my 550 ml cup / pot and see how that rolls …. since it's so compact … it's "perfect on paper" but will upgrade to a Caldera later if need be …

Hi, I'm using Toaks Light Titanium pot 650ml. I bought it for that exactly tiny and light setup. The pot weigh just 80 gram (incl. lid). So far I used it with zelph's windscreen and actually it works fine. Yes you need to 'mess' with paper clip, not something I worry about. With that being said, I'm still searching for light Titanium windscreen that will incorporate some pot support. Unfortunately Traildesigns doesn't manufacture sidewinder for this pot (I do also own their ti-tri for evernew 1.3l and ultra happy with it). So now I'm at giving up on that idea. Please post back after you receive your windscreen.

Gregory is it possible you could punch holes for a stake/s to go through your windscreen to function as a pot support?

Four Dog Stoves sells titanium windscreens and they may be willing to customize one for you.

I have a Four Dog windscreen. It's very durable (read relatively heavy) and he was not able to customize for me. It's a nice windscreen though. His lids are A++

Hi. I saw many designs with holes in the windscreen, but never thought to do it to the zelph's one. Thanks for the idea! Usually I don't carry 2 extra stakes. So maybe the flatcatgear design is the way to go. Not sure if zelph's windscreen can hold a pot with water.

Hi Trace, You said that you did not want to try a Trail Designs Caldera Windscreen because you wanted something same enough to fit inside your 550 pot. Take a look at this setup Evernew 400ml Cup + Sidewinder Ti-Tri Bundle. The screen is very small and fits inside the 400 cup. The nice thing that the design lends itself to many other pots. I use a Evernew 550 pot/mug. You can use a gram cracker esbit stove or a Starlyte Alcohol stove. Take a look it works very well. I forgot to add that this system was developed by BPL member Jason Quick. The link below is to the thread that shows Jason's quest. http://www.backpackinglight.com/cgi-bin/backpackinglight/forums/thread_display.html?forum_thread_id=72925 Fred

MYOG with titanium might sound daunting, but it actually cuts rather easily with some fairly heavy-duty household scissors (Westcott titanium) and holes can be punched easily with a 1-hole punch such as this one. In fact, I tried different kinds of punches and this was the best/cheapest option. I made a screen that uses Ti shepherd hook skewers for pot support. Shown here with Esbit set-up (and OC 3-cup pot), but also works fine with a 12-10 alky stove. Can’t see it exactly, but it has a single tab bent back that fits into a slot that was cut with an xacto knife. Very stable. Ti is .005″ from Ti Goat. windscreen 01windscreen 02windscreen 03

yeah, about the easiest MYOG project flashing from local hardware store Rather than holes, you could just cut out some triangles fro the bottom with your scissors. You don't need it to close completely, leave a gap for the valve. Make sure it's down-wind.

Rather than holes, you could just cut out some triangles fro the bottom with your scissors. LOL, never thought of that — good idea, I'll remember it for next time! ;^)

I have a caldera cone for a snow peak 900 ml pot. The cone fits in the pot, provides pot support. And can burn wood or rabbit fuel. Buy a trail designs setup unless you have way too much free time.

Fred: Thanks for the suggestion. The 400 ml is just a tad too small volume wise for me and now we're dealing with a band, no lid, etc. … I contacted TD and Rand indicated that using the cone made for the 400 isn't going to work well with a 500 / 550 (they aren't as wide as 400 cup, so it may not nest) and he suggested the 600 ml pot and caldera…. but that's a pot, which means I need to now bring a cup as well, which is the point of going with the 500 / 550 mug / pot … no need for a second cup! Got a few different windscreens coming in … going to rock those out and see how things work out and go from there … thanks again to all for your help!

Trace, what are you using for the pot support??

I have the evernew 900 mug/pot that I’d love to get more use out of, but lots of back and forth with Rand and it’s not possible to do a nesting cone with.  So I’ve also been looking at different windscreens to make more use of that pot with my starlyte stove.  please share more details!

I came to the conclusion that holes add nothing other than less wind resistance. There is plenty of airflow.

Jennifer, it’s esbit, here’s pics ….. My main goal was to have everything nest in a 550ml pot, it’s the perfect size for what I need to do, which is boil two cups of water, eat meals out of and drink coffee out of …. My alcohol stove nests as well,  but then need fuel in separate container … so rocking esbit for now …. Cameron, the holes are only on 1/2 the windscreen, so the windward side has no holes.

Trace – very nice photos; glad you like your windscreen. It is not too hard to punch holes in Ti foil and use 2 skewer stakes for pot support, but I prefer to have a dedicated pot stand as I usually am using my stakes to pitch my shelter; a simple wire mesh stand only adds about 9 grams to your kit.

Trace, is that the stock small qiwiz screen? It looks like a nice fit for the Toaks 550.

Can you open the handles over the screen? It looks like you can’t from the photo.

PostedDec 10, 2015 at 10:26 am

Matthew: It’s custom sized …. you cannot….. I just give it 15 seconds after the boil and the handles are touchable ….

If you want to use your pot handles and they go too low to clear the top of the windscreen you can either have the windscreen be made to a lower height than standard or you can cut a notch for the handles in a standard height windscreen.
