I recently took a quick day hike on the Florida Trail, while back east for business. Check these guys out!grizzled praying mantis This little guy made a little "scritch" noise when I was stopped at a trail junction. When I looked over, he hunkered down. If he hadn't made a noise, I never would have seen him. Too cool!big spider This one was suspended over the trail. Yes, he is as big as he looks! Then, my favorite:armadillo And finally, this fellow at the trailhead:frog

And armadillos are not a native species but are all over the place there. Edit: spell check failure.

Maybe so, but I've wanted to see one alive for a long time, and finally got my chance. I've seen them smushed on the side of the road, but this was way better. This guy was drinking at a small run-off, then laid down and rolled over in the stream like a dog. So cute! Don't want to cuddle one, though, they can carry a form of leprosy.

I once knew a guy in Chicago that actually had a pet armadillo. He lived in a cockroach infested apartment, and the little guy would scurry around all night, when they don't much sleep, eating all the roaches it could. He thought it was a nice attribute for a pet, but pretty noisy when he was trying to sleep. It would bang into things as it tap danced across the tile and hardwood floors. Then there was the business of how the armadillo liked to be held and cuddled and petted. He would "pet" him by using a spoon to stroke its scales. He said it would actually sort of purr when he did that. PYOP (pet your own pet)?
