I'm getting ready to place an order with Rockywoods, including some #5 and #8 waterproof zips. I found that Rockywoods offers a #5 YKK zipper for $5.26/yd: http://www.rockywoods.com/Hardware-Zippers/YKK-Water-repellant-Zippers/Water-Resistant-5-Coil-Zipper-by-the-Yard-Black-Uretek-Finish As well as a non-branded #5 zipper for $2.26/yd: http://www.rockywoods.com/Hardware-Zippers/YKK-Water-repellant-Zippers/Water-Resistant-5-Coil-Zipper-by-the-Yard-Shiny-Black Similarly, the price differential of the YKK vs generic for the #8s is $7.85 vs. $3.49. The generics also have some pretty attractive price breaks for bulk purchases, bringing the generic #8 down to only $1.99/yd for a lifetime's supply of 25 yds of zipper. I was wondering if anyone has had any experience with these generic zippers- are they low quality and failure prone, making the upgrade to the YKK zippers worth the cost? Or should I go for what appears to be a bargain offering? Any insights would be appreciated!

IMO: The off brand zippers are trash. You won't be saving any money when you have to replace them again and again.

I agree and say stick with YKK. They're like Legos of the zipper world. YKK will cost more but the quality you get comes from extremely tight tolerances and more durable materials. Those are both things that contribute heavily to performance as well as wear and tear. If the cheap zippers performed well for "200-300 zips" then it would be worth considering…but I highly doubt they will perform on par with YKK from day one. Also, check your non-branded zipper URL.
