I'm quitting my job and hiking the PCT this upcoming year. I'm looking at Henry Shire's Tarp Tents as my shelter of choice. Typically I sleep outside with a ground cloth unless bugs or weather are nasty.

I'm looking at the Contrail and Rainbow. Any thoughts on these? What about the possibility of using a 2 person tent for extra space (the Gossamer tent/Henry Shires co-production still just weighs 21oz)?

I've also heard about Six Moons tents.

Lastly, should I get a tarp with or without a bottom? I like to sleep outside, so maybe a separate ground cloth is best that can function both ways. But then again, it seems most people are recommending the bathtub bottom.

Thanks!

Where's Franco? OK, here's my opinion on the two, both of which I own. Plenty of room in either of these… no need to get a 2 person version for space. I'd definitely recommend the floored version. I used the Contrail on a thru and other treks and love it. Lighter, packs smaller, and takes under 90 sec to put up. I tried to switch to the Rainbow so that I'd have the freestanding option, but never quite grew as attached to it as I did the Contrail. I can recommend it unconditionally.

I'm a huge HS TarpTent fan but I'm sure that the SixMoonDesigns or MountainLaurelDesigns shelters would do well too.

Regarding integrated floors, it depends on where you'll camp.

In established and well used campsites where I might have no choice but to setup on compacted soil I want a floor. Otherwise I prefer floorless.

The idea is to accommodate what water wants to do. In an untrampled not too rocky site it wants to soak into the ground … a floor can only get in the way and is a Bad Thing. On compacted soil, water wants to pool up or flow over the surface … in which case a bathtub floor is a Good Thing

Which Tarp is the schiznizzle? Depends on a lot of factors:

Your Physical Size verses the Shelters internal dimensions,
Will you be traveling alone or sharing your shelter
Geographic location and Altitude you’ll be traveling through
The time of year or type of weather you may encounter,
Insects (fly’s, mosquitoes, scorpions or even ants)
Do you prefer a freestanding verses a non-freestanding design
The amount of space you want to fill in your pack and carry
How about the color

All the Tarps/Shelters you mentioned above are very popular and have their strengths and weakness. But in the end it’s a personal preference.
