Problem: Don't like hoods in warmer, wet weather. Too hot, rain still can blow in, etc. Solution: Take Polyester booney type hat sourced from Costco. Sew some velcro to some of the edges of said hat. Take some WPB material or perhaps even the heavy duty, lower CFM EPIC nylon fabric i have some of, cut to size and shape of hat but with some side venting, and sew on corresponding velcro. Voila, breathable, sun protection when you need it, and cooler WPB head protection when you need it for very little extra weight. Normally, using just one layer of EPIC for rain protection for a directly hit area, wouldn't be a good idea because it will wet out and start to leak. However, with a layer of both highly water resistant EPIC and then polyester, probably won't leak through much at all. The hat is mildly water resistant as is. Side note: Thinking of combining it with a mini, pull over, super simple, minimalist smock type, hoodless poncho also made out of same EPIC fabric. To go over extra silicone beefed up 2012 Houdini windjacket. Have velcro on part of the sides to keep it together at the bottom. The combo should keep the core from getting wet, but be much less flappy and awkward than a regular poncho, less weight, still breathe well. Will test first in non backpacking conditions as to not risk hypothermia. Combine with rain skirt and fishnet baselayer. Or, is JIT just plum crazy, stupid light?
