I think I may have found my solo winter tent. The Soulo weighs almost a pound more than a Lighthouse, but I really like the idea of using a double wall wall tent in the winter.Plus, I remain slightly suspicious of relying on a tent that is "water resistant".

Also, the Hilleberg Unna looks like a possibility.

Is anyone familiar with these tents and know when they will be available stateside?

Regards,

Eric

My Unna has been a great tent and I prefer it to my Stephenson 2R for mid winter use because it is much warmer and is superior to managing condensation. I also like the rectangle 27 square foot floor plan, the 40 plus inch interior height, and the side door entry. I have yet to use the vestibule but I have practiced making one in the field, otherwise I keep my gear in the tent where there is plenty of room in appropriate sized garbage sacks. There is a lot of useable interior volume in the Unna for one plus gear; I tend to use my 2R for the other seasons and phase the Unna out by early spring.

I see in the latest Hilleberg catalog (pdf available online) that the Soulo is listed as 4 lb 10 oz for the full kit (stuff sack, extra pole section, guylines and stakes). Heavier than I was thinking.

I'm considering it as well – would love to see one in person, though, to get a better sense of the interior space. Only 38" at maximum peak, and a curved drop off from there in all directions.

I'd love to look at the preview, but I'm a little put out by the e-strip search I need to go through to register on that site – which I think I actually already did before he clamped things down.

Anyhow – I'm now torn between several hillebergs to add to my Akto.
Soulo does look like a great tent though.

They also edit members' posts for content (and not egregious stuff – sometimes just to remove things they don't think are relevant to a thread), or to add links to them.

I'd stopped going there as a result.

In any case, Bernie posted a fine first look at the Soulo, with useful pictures.

My post on this site was deleted (staff picks thread) after I brought up to Alan that XUL had another definition on Gossamer Gear's site..lol. Wonder if Bernie is moderating here now.

I second Scott's comments about the Unna as a winter tent. I've had some condensation problems below 0 F, but my tent is several years old and the newer versions have a vent in the dome that (I am told) has improved things. Roomiest solo tent I've found, and the height is especially appreciated.

I meant to post Hilleberg tent pic not Soulo. I actually thought that it was the Allak, but the hood is the one on the Staika, so you are correct.
My point was to highlight that amazing shot, one of the best tent pic I have seen

Agreed – it's an awesome photo. There's another from that same team in the 2008 catalog, from a different angle, and a great shot of a solo mountaineer in Nepal with a Jannu (amongst many other great shots).

I will finish the sentence for David :
Realistically we all can't get what we want for Christmas…. in my case because it will be ready in January.

No he has a contrail, and therefore does not need a Soulo

No, I just finished typing the sentence that David left in mid air.
As much as he is pretending that he doesn't want one, he will not be able to sleep till he does have it.

I am a slow typist.. two comments posted in the meantime…
Roger Brown, show some respect, it's a Contrail ( and stand up when you type that)

Wait till you see the winter version…

Just teasing. As you well know , I am not aware of a 'winterized Contrail" but I am waiting for one …
