Hello there fellow backpackers! I'm from Denmark and this is my first post on this forum, but I've been lurking around and reading a lot over the past few weeks. My girlfriend and I will be doing the Torres del Paine full circuit in 3 three weeks, and I'm not quite sure what to do about the tent. I have a Tarptent Stratospire 2 (non-freestanding) that served us well when we trekked the West Coast Trail earlier this year, but I'm unsure if it would be able to handle the high winds and stormy weather on the Torres del Paine. Does anybody have any experience with the Stratospire on Torres del Paine or other similar non-freestanding tents in high winds? Your help would be greatly appreciated! – Mikkel

What speed of wind are you looking at? I've seen videos of the SS2 taking some decent wind, but it obviously won't be as wind worthy as a mid or Trailstar. Ryan

I spent 60 nights in Patagonia with my Notch last year. You will be fine with the SS2 in that park.

Hello again From what I can read I will be facing wind speeds up to 100 mph. Nonetheless, I've decided to bring the tent along based on your comments. Thanks guys! Also, I found a video of some people using it in the Alps in quite stormy weather – they seemed to be doing fine.

you will not actually be sleeping in places with 100mph winds – you may be walking there, but all the campsites are sheltered. no worries, and have fun!

"In very high winds, the latter might snap (has happened with me). More specific the plastic ring connecting the Tarptent with the peg. " Not sure what you mean there because of the 6 staking points, 2 (the raised corners)are TripTease cordage and the other 4 are shock cords. The "plastic" bits that Tarptent use are made with Delrin, a Dupont product that is , as far as I know, as good as it gets for non metallic bits. http://www.dupont.com/products-and-services/plastics-polymers-resins/thermoplastics/articles/acetal-copolymer-vs-homopolymer.html?src=gg_dpp-us-delrin_delrin
